Bill Clinton & Monica Lewinsky
After the news about Clinton and Lewinsky became public, Transparency
included a site on the subject that generated a good deal of heated
correspondence. Most of the site is no longer posted.

You are correct, there is a noticeable shift in what the American public
deems important in their elected leaders. People are apparently no longer so concerned
about the personal lives of their public officials, especially if they think these
officials are doing a fairly good job in the offices in which they were elected.
I think this is a good thing. Do you feel it is necessary to know about
the sexual and personal life of your boss? Or of your colleagues? I don't.
America has always been a nation of striving, go-getting perfectionists. That
perfectionist streak sometimes extended to being preoccupied with attacking those with
'unsavory' qualities, whether those 'unsavory' qualities were darker skin, communist
beliefs, sexual mores, etc.
As this 'scandal' plays out, I applaud at our--dare I say it?--maturity. Historically,
adultery in the presidency has occurred relatively often.
It is not shocking that it happens so much as it is, in this instance, being reported
so graphically and continually by the media.
Sincerely,
Andrew Anosa

Wow, based on what is being said on the news across the country, the
people believe president Clinton is guilty. How can anybody possibly
believe any of
this?
1. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE!!! How would you like to be convicted of a serious crime
based on what one single person said to another person.
2. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE!!!!! Even if there were 100,000 hours of tape
recording, there has to be some sort of indisputable evidence on the tape to mean a damn
thing.
3. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE!!!!!!!!! People, listen up,... The world of
politics is vicious and very cutthroat, you should not have to be told this. Don't
just watch the news and believe,... lately today's media, is no better than slanderous
tabloids. Today's journalists are very much like PIRANHA, vicious in getting there
meal, journalists are just as vicious in getting or making a story, they don't care about
the costs involved or who is ripped to shreds.
Ask questions!!! Think of alternate possibilities, motives, etc.
think for yourself, don't let the self-serving media think for you. This
being tried and convicted by the media has got to stop.
4. Right now it's JUST AS POSSIBLE that Monica Lewinsky was willing to
sacrifice herself and her career for a personal mission to destroy President
Clinton. Don't be talking about impeachment over hearsay!!!

The landscape is littered with the reputations of Military Officers
(including a recent nominee to be the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of
Staff), Corporate CEOs (remember Bill Agee?), Professors and College
Presidents -- all of whom were engaged in consensual (relations) with women in
their employee or under their control or protection. Imagine a college
professor or President who "dates" a student -- say the President of
Stanford and a student who is the daughter of a President -- and
discover how quickly that professor or President is fired in disgrace.
Rush to judgment? It would be difficult to avoid a lynching!
The motive of Kenneth Starr is immaterial -- all Independent Counsels
and Grand Juries are intended to look for problem areas, and this
Independent Counsel was appointed by Janet Reno AND CAN BE FIRED BY
JANET RENO.
If there is REAL, as opposed to political concern about the Independent
Counsel, perhaps both the President AND the Independent Counsel should
resign. Meanwhile, Attorney General Janet Reno can fire Kenneth Starr at
any time, and for any -- or no -- reason. She does not because she
approved his inquiry into the most recent scandal.

I agree with you. The problem is, as I see it, the American people
are
reacting like most people that have been taken; they don't want to admit
it or tell anyone they have been taken because they are ashamed to be
looked at as stupid. You are right; there has been no one I've spoken
too that has said he didn't do it and most have said they believe he did
it. After saying that, some have said, "well, let's stay out of his
bedroom." More properly they should have said, "let's stay out of his
bedroom because I am too ashamed to admit I may have made a mistake
about this guy and I will simply choose to take the safe, easy way out
and ignore it UNTIL IT HURTS ME PERSONALLY."
I wonder how many people would change their minds about their personal
views of him if they assumed the same character role as Clinton. They
most likely would suffer different consequences unless they had a
Hillary skirt to hide under and ignore the truth for her own power
agenda.
Why aren't the news media going after the stories that would really make
some news. Let's ask Hillary the hard questions and demand she answer
the specific question and not let her side step the question and twist
the question into a diatribe of her points she is trying to make.
I am deeply saddened by the way Clinton hides behind the lies and
doesn't have the character to admit his faults. He should be hiding
behind the truth and leading this country with dignity, not false
probity.

Too many people have make comparisons between the problems of Nixon and
Clinton with their special prosecutors. Even assuming the worst, which
is something we have all be come very good at when it comes to Bill
Clinton, we should keep the following in mind.
The special prosecutors who dogged Nixon, Reagan and Bush were not
interested in personal relationships. Nixon attempted to keep hush an
attempt to interfere with the presidential election process. Reagan
might have actually organized the sale of arms to the contras in direct
violation of congress! Later he claimed he could not remember. Then, in
one of history's great evil ironies, he was afflicted with Alzheimer's
disease. Now he doesn't remember anything. George Bush, then
vice-president, was in the room for all the meetings but developed a
poor memory, too. These are criminal acts while in office. These men, if
guilty, actually used the presidency as a tool to commit these crimes.
Even, assuming the worst, if Clinton is guilty of Whitewater, he used
his Governor's office as the tool, so why isn't there a State prosecutor
on the case instead of a federal one? Why are we all paying for this
mess?
If Bill Clinton, as Governor of Arkansas, had shaken a few dozen hands
and willingly "implied" that he would support the Whitewater deal, does
that mean he actually knew the deal was rotten? Land deals go bad all
the time. It's called business risk. Was this deal originally intended
to go bad? And what exactly did Clinton have to do with it? No one seems
to know, even after more than four years of Kenneth Starr's well funded
investigation. And unlike previous special prosecutors, Starr is well
known by all to be an ultra-conservative Republican, so he is not just
an unbiased seeker of truth. He is also an extremely competent
investigator by all accounts. Yet four years later, after a full scale
attack by Republicans against Clinton, here we are still with not a
single Whitewater charge against Clinton. Despite the circumstantial
evidence, despite the Rose law firm records in the living quarters, if
it were you instead of Clinton, do you think Starr would still be
investigating? THAT is the most critical question.
It has long been said that presidents should be held to a higher
standard of ethics. But what exactly ought to be the punishment for
"unethical" behavior? Why isn't this punishment written into law
somewhere? And why are lawyers, of all people, making the determination
of what is or isn't ethical? Can anyone really say? Isn't that why we
have written laws? Public norms vary and change. An affair may be
unseemly and despicable, particularly with a young star-struck girl,
but is it in itself illegal? And since his wife seems not to care, why
should you or I? The evidence that has leaked out so far has largely
been debunked already. I even suspect that the white house is the source
for most of these leaks, not Starr's office, because it makes the whole
case seem more and more fabricated. A Nixon white house dirty trickster
named Goldberg, now a New York literary agent still deeply connected to
the Republican party, directed Linda Tripp to record Lewinsky. Isn't
that at least interesting? Goldberg also admits she made up the story
about Clinton's se men on Lewinsky's dress just to get the press's
attention. And it worked. Who's the real sucker here?
Kenneth Starr connects the Lewinsky affair to Whitewater as follows. If
Clinton tried to induce Lewinsky to lie, then he is the kind of person
who would induce Webster Hubble to lie. If Clinton and Vernon Jordan
arranged cushy jobs for Lewinsky, perhaps it was in exchange for her
silence. And Then they must have done the same for Hubble, right? Ergo,
their guilty!
Just a moment folks. Jordan's best friend is engaged to Lewinsky's
mother. That may be the reason for Jordan's great assistance to
Lewinsky. And as for Clinton's asking her to lie, don't married men who
cheat always deny it? Why should a president be held to not a higher,
but rather a different standard? I'd lie too. So would you. Does anyone
remember Newt Gingrich calling the Washington Post to report he'd just
had oral sex with a woman on his desk in the Capitol Building? That did
happen. It was widely reported. He eventually admitted it and said that
oral sex is not fornication. But since he admitted it he's okay? And
Clinton's denial is wrong? This is stupid. Clinton's denial actually
makes more sense. As for asking Lewinsky to lie about it, Gingrich and
his slut were not pounced upon by a special prosecutor, so there was no
reason to lie. Do you even remember her name? I don't.
The issue is, why is the special prosecutor investigating Clinton's sex
life to begin with? The answer is, politics. Republican find it unfair
that a Democrat has the White House. Rather than run mainstream
candidates that can win an election, they'd rather subvert the system
altogether.
Special prosecutors have their place when officials use their office
for personal gain or to destroy others. For Whitewater there may be at
least some legitimate purpose for Starr, but the Lewinsky affair is just
a last gasp effort to bring Clinton down. You may dislike Clinton, but
this is not about Bill Clinton. This is about the future of the American
presidency. If Clinton is a knave and a rascal, elect someone different
next time. You're allowed to vote. But we have to resist the temptation
to use extra-ordinary means to remove presidents. The special
prosecutor's job is to determine if Bill Clinton was involved in criminal
activities while Governor or Arkansas. Let him go forward or resign. But
his job is not to destroy the other party's president. Americans have
demonstrated their desire to have different parties control the
government's legislative and executive branches. Starr and the
Republicans must learn to respect and observe the will of the people.

I totally agree. I think Hillary has a deal with him to keep them both
in office. She is worse than him. I believe she is his problem both at
home and in office.
The sooner he resigns the better for this country. He has not been
truthful in his personal life nor in his political life. They think they
are invincible. All the people will believe them because they have the
power. Most people fear them . Hillary said they are being unjustly
accused of murder, maybe there is some truth that they were involved in
both Foster and Brown. When you get too close beware.

Your piece really sets a sad example for future US generations. Where were
you when I was grounded by my parents for telling a fib?
The people of the United States of America have to stop allowing the media
to set our standards for what is acceptable. Continually glorifying the
liars and cheaters of our country, by not making them accountable for their
actions and providing them excuses, is sending an extremely horrible message
to our local citizenry.
Recently, while attending a community meeting I witnessed a distinguished
looking gentleman describe to us that the local gang problem had been
resolved and if the police would just leave the neighborhood alone all would
be wonderful. Sadly, some members of the audience encouraged and cheered
this young man who was accompanied by his wife and child. Eventually, his
speech was interrupted by the officer conducting the meeting... the officer
pointed out that this "upstanding citizen" was a convicted criminal with a
public record for storing guns for several local gangs. Regardless of his
record he was bold enough to plant his seed that the police were a corrupt
and vile bunch.
Obviously, the educated and informed half of the group knew to disregard his
speech. However, the other half left the auditorium confused. When he
was
confronted with his past record he said he couldn't remember and that he
wasn't here to talk about his past. When the conversation turned against him
he mentioned the "conspiracy" that was out to get him.... How can you
blame
this punk from trying to walk around the facts?
When do the people of integrity and followers of justice get a fair shake
without being shut out all the time. Let's clean up some of the
gray....Please for the sake of our children.

It appears to me that there is a great deal
of confusion regarding this situation with Clinton.
First, there is a lot of spin being put out
that this is a "personal" issue and that the public should not be prying into
the president's private life. This is complete hypocrisy. If you remember Sen.
Packwood and Gary Hart, they were run because it happened to fit someone's political
agenda. I never heard anyone running around defending their right to privacy.
In and interview earlier this week Hilary said that the American people would
understand her husband's situation when the complete "story" came out. The
interviewer missed a great opportunity to counter with " how about the truth?"
The Clintons excel in telling stories
.There are a couple of points that should
be remembered. This woman Tripp was a witness to the Kathleen Wiley situation, to
which, Wiley HAS testified that Clinton pressed himself upon her without her consent.
Tripp had been banished to the Pentagon and lo and behold, who ends up working with
her but Miss Monica. Apparently Lewinsky was trying to get Tripp to deny the Wiley
incident when she was to be questioned about it. Instead of perjuring herself, Tripp
started to tape Lewinsky for her own protection and notified Starr of what was happening.
If Tripp says nothing happened, then it is just Clinton's word against Wiley's.
If Tripp corroborates Wiley, then Paula Jones has her evidence of
Bill's erotomania.
I think Starr is after much bigger issues
than whether or not Monica was doing Bill in the White House. Certain elements of
the press and Clinton's spin team are effectively taking the focus off of the real issues
that are at stake.

These were sent as three separate e-mail responses.
I'm in complete agreement with Hillary. This is a right wing witch
hunt gone
completely out of control. I wish we had even the interest of the millions
spent on trying to find out Bill's dirty laundry. I, for one, could care
less who he's slept with (or hasn't). Run the country . . . end world hunger
do something worthwhile . . . stop spying on Clinton. I'm fed up with it!
No, I don't believe that Clinton should step down. I do believe
Kenneth Starr should step down and stop this witch hunt. I'm sure
that if given $30 million I could perhaps find things in your background
you'd like left unpublished too.
Since when has anyone who has power not used that power to get what he/she
wanted? Even sexually? I mean, please, are you naive? Men have been
using
this method to entertain the young and stupid since the beginning of time. I'm
not saying it's right but to bring down a presidency because of it . . . ? Don't
be ridiculous. Get out of Clinton's bedroom. Let's take the high road even
though
the President may not have. The rest of the world must think us quite the child
look at France? They actually love their leader's mistress and child.

I am not exactly pleased with our president's problems with his sex life
but that's not what I was worried about when I voted for him the last time
What I was worried about most was how the media in this country was being
taken over by Democrat-hating right-wingers whose only gods are money and
power. I registered Republican once in my life so I could vote against
Ronald Reagan in the primary--but he managed to fool the electorate like
no president had since Eisenhower.
I have two Purple Hearts from Okinawa and what I want now is a president
who can run the country and if he can keep us out of war it will be
terrific--if not--well at least I know that he will have tried.
Have you been in any military? Any wars? Have you protested our
involvement in Vietnam? I, along with my family marched three times against
that evil war--I guess that was the main reason I voted the first time for
William Clinton.

Bob
The corruption of our media and politics, Bob, isn't caused only by Republicans. It is
brought about by an overextension and misuse of corporate power and the ascendancy of
wheeler-dealers into positions of power in many of our institutions. And that is a
phenomenon that the media, the Republican Congress and the Democratic president are all
enmeshed in and have all been corrupted by. We need a dynamic and healthy business
community but we also need institutions in this country that are governed by something
other than market forces. When it comes to this issue, Bill Clinton is more a part of the
problem than a part of the solution.
* * * * * *
It would be useful to me and to many others I'm sure, to understand the
powers and the role of the special prosecutor. I am of the impression
Congress has given itself the authority to appoint a special prosecutor
to conduct criminal investigations on its behalf. On what basis can it
decide a special prosecutor needs to exist? Where is it in the
constitution that Congress even has this authority? Congress is a
supposed to make law, not enforce it. That is the role of the judicial
and executive branches of government, if I remember my high school
civics correctly. It seems to me Congress's abuses of its power far
exceed those of the president.
Isn't the existence of a special prosecutor supposed to be temporary?
Kenneth Starr has been around as long as Clinton has been president. Why
has his investigation been allowed to drag on so long? It started, if
I'm not mistaken, over alleged improprieties in land dealings and
campaign financing the President and the First Lady are said to have
committed while he was governor of Arkansas, the Whitewater stuff.
I also don't understand how Kenneth Starr has the power to subpoena
witnesses to testify regarding Paula Jones.
Paula Jones has filed a civil suit seeking damages against the president
for alleged sexual harassment, again, while he was governor of Arkansas,
correct? Is there no statute of limitations in civil suit? Isn't her
suit being heard in Washington, D.C. federal district court, or a
municipal court in Virginia or Maryland or Delaware? Why is a
politically appointed prosecutor even involved with this case?
The chances there is more compelling evidence against the president must
be strong. Otherwise, would the Attorney General, a presidential
appointee, authorize a wiretap of conversations alleging presidential
misconduct without other corroborating evidence? Starr must have
convinced Reno he has other sources to corroborate the Lewinsky/Tripp
tapes. He certainly can't expect to nail Clinton on the basis of those
tapes.
Little also has been written about Linda Tripp, that I've seen, at
least. Is there a chance she is also one of Clinton's flings. What is
her motivation in all this, that she would tape 20 hours of
conversations with Lewinsky. Did she start making tapes on her own
volition, or was she sought out by Republican muckrakers? Is this
simply a case of two of the president's ex-lovers comparing notes? Or
did someone with more insidious motives latch on to Tripp.

What can we as everyday Americans do to stop this outrage? Where does
freedom of the press end and libel begin? I am just sick over this entire
scandal. I cannot believe that an obviously disturbed young woman is being
believed when there is proof that she and her own mother have lied before
about similar incidents? I want to stop this before it ruins the
Presidency of a man that has made my life easier and has made me proud to
call myself an American again. Why were Reagan and Bush allowed off the
hook with an " I do not recall?" over selling arms to our enemies to fund a
war that Congress specifically stated we would not support. But Bill
Clinton is being crucified on the cross of sexual innuendo when he has had
no illegal or shady deals in the important matter of running this country.
So, I ask again what can I do? What can my neighbors and friends do? Where
do we write? Who do we tell? If anyone has any suggestions please tell me.
Sincerely,
A very concerned "middle American with great family values."
Gerald Arters, Jr
The good news for Clinton, Gerald, is that people seem to be becoming
tired of the story. But Starr will feed more material into the media
system in the near future that will get it going again.

Bill Clinton should not resign. He is doing a good job for this
country and the people are satisfied with his performance.
INSTEAD, Kenneth Starr should be removed. He has already
wasted over 30,000,000 dollars of the taxpayers' money in an
effort to bring down the President. He should NEVER have
been appointed. He has more power than anybody in the U.S.
How did this happen? He is nothing but a right wing fanatic who
doesn't care about this country or its people and will use any
tactic to gain his goals. I think he is violating people's civil
rights and getting away with it. Where is the Media on this one?
If Bill Clinton has to resign over this it will be one of the darkest
days of our country. Nobody's privacy should be invaded the
way his and is family's has been. It is an absolute outrage. My
husband and I don't care about his sex life--that is between him and
his wife. We are the laughing stock of the world.

I agree with you. I'm no right-winger, either, nor am I a prude, but
I
do have daughters, and I'd hate to have their boss follow Clinton's
example. I don't think there's any question of Clinton's guilt at this
point. His actions are totally inconsistent with innocence. He may
avoid jail with his evasive, cleverly worded "denials," but remaining in
office is something else again. He should spare us any further agony
and go now.

It has been recently stated that, should Pres. Clinton survive this
latest and most serious of personal attacks, that he will be untouchable
for the remainder of his presidential term. In fact, he will be
considered as one of the greatest presidents we've ever had --- not
because he really accomplished anything significant --- but rather
because he has survived so many personal partisan attacks. Like Timex,
he's taken a licking, but has kept on ticking.
It is often the case in a two-term president, and has been stated about
Bill Clinton, that -- now that there are only a couple of years left in
his final term in office -- he is more concerned with the legacy he will
leave behind more than anything, and he is now trying to establish
himself as a great president.
In this most recent scandal when so little is provable, might we even
assume that the President himself is the conductor behind all of this.
Could it be that he and his image-makers have created this entire
scandal, and intend to build it to such a feverish pitch of implied
danger to his presidency that, when it suddenly all pans out that
nothing happened between him and Ms. Lewinsky, he suddenly emerges from
the smoke as the great man who withstood a nation and its libelous
media.
Perhaps all of this has been truly staged to make Clinton out to be a
president who, if he cannot orchestrate great change in our nation, can
at least survive the meanest of personal attacks.
Personally, I no longer believe anything this administration may have to
say, nor would I disbelieve anything which might happen.

The Democrats have themselves to blame for the media frenzy around the
alleged Clinton-Lewinsky affair. They were merciless in their scathing
attacks against Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas due to the
nonsensical verbal statements made by Anita Hill. Seems the most damaging
thing Anita could come up with was she said that Mr. Thomas harassed her
by asking if there was a pubic hair on his soda pop can.
The Democrats were all over Mr. Thomas, stating that behavior while
working as a public representative is totally inappropriate and is grounds
for pulling someone from their office. Never mind that these were mere
allegations against Mr. Thomas, and very insubstantial. The Democrats and
NOW had a field day saying "we believe you Anita!".
What President Clinton is doing is shameful, yet I don't hear NOW saying
"we believe you Paula", etc. (substitute several other names if you wish!)
And it shocks me to see the hypocrisy of the Democrats that they don't
chastise him in the same manner that they did against Clarence Thomas. When
Clinton took that office, it came with the understanding that it is the
highest office in the land, and he had better leave his pants on and
remember to perform his duties in a manner that reflects the stature of
that office.

Ya know, I think George Carlin put it best when he said "Garbage in,

about several issues. KNOWING there was an ongoing investigation into his
actions, and KNOWING he was a ladies man. Why start crying now? Maybe it isn't

these people and they do what they have always done. Look out for #1. Garbage
in, garbage out. Personally, I voted for Perot.

Hello,
My name is Dwayne Caines and I hail from the beautiful island of
Bermuda.
I am somewhat disappointed at the way the media and the American people
have turned on ol' Bill.
If you think for a minute infidelity is something reserved for President
Clinton only then you are suffering from a severe case of ostrich
syndrome. Such happens everyday in every country around the world.
No, I am not condoning man's (and apparently Clinton's) all too frequent
infidelities and skirt chasing capers, but it is an unfortunate reality
that goes back to the beginning of time. As an individual who is not an
American but watches with intrigue as this whole fiasco unfolds I feel
sorry for America. The grand USA comes across to the rest of the world
as a Nation that is always meddling in other countries' affairs yet
cannot maintain its own.
Right now Republicans are doing cartwheels and handstands while they
relish in the president's looming demise, not realizing that it is a
very sad indictment on Americans in general.
Under Clinton's leadership he has cut the deficit, created more jobs,
resolved more conflicts and done more for women and minorities
(arguably) than any other president. Leave Hillary and Bill to settle
their own personnel - pun intended - affairs. He was voted to a second
term because the American people felt secure in his leadership. This is
his last term in office, don't allow the public fixation with (this kind of material) skew
the judgment of the masses.
A good leader is good not infallible. Clinton is no Nixon don't make
the comparison.
Remember, America considers themselves the leaders of the free world ...
GROW UP AND ACT LIKE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To Fred Stone: Well, this morning our pres blew any possibility of your
excellent
"fireside chat" idea being realized. As I suggested in my response to your
e-mail
letter, his advisors would lack the imagination to push ahead with anything resembling
your speech idea. Instead, of course, at the daycare Center gathering, he succinctly
denied everything. What a dull, disgusting strategy: he thinks he has the upper hand
because of Lewinsky's statement on tape that she has led a life of lies. Perhaps this
does give him the upper hand, but it's cheap way to get it. Because he has done a
respectable job the American people gave a second thought during Super Bowl time, and
in a late Sunday CNN poll, his popularity rating went up to 58% from the previous 45%,
with 78% saying that he shouldn't resign. But today's statement, meant to quell
uneasiness before tomorrow's State of the Union speech, has - I believe - done
absolutely nothing for him, and in fact, will work against him. I happen to favor his
presidency, so I want to think he's not a sleaze: but when I heard him blatantly deny
sexual relations, I knew I heard, once again, an unsolicited lie. I continue to
believe him on the obstruction of justice matter: I don't think he did. But almost
nobody (except Madeline Albright, and even with her only maybe) believes him on the
sex relations matter. He is the king of Transparency this morning: he should be the
editor of this web-site (I suggest he gets an Oscar from the creators of this site).
Your speech gave him back his power: his total denial this morning rendered him, at
last, impotent.

Yeah, who cares? Certainly, who could possibly care very much just
what is
going on behind the man's zipper. That is without a doubt besides the point.
But then he goes and lies about it. Maybe we should care about the lying.
Not caring about the lying is a tougher sell.
But the reason I buy it is that I have not yet seen a president or even a
viable presidential candidate who wasn't a liar about much more important
things than his satyriasis. Reagan, perhaps my favorite recent president,
seems to have lied about the whole Iran-Contra thing. Bush "Read my lips -
I will say anything to get reelected."
Maybe Carter didn't lie, but who even wants to think about another
president like that?
Huh. Maybe we should have another president like Carter.
But as much as I like Reagan and am indifferent about Clinton, I am more
comfortable with someone lying about (this) than about violating
laws limiting his exercise of presidential power.
But I suppose Carter is looking somewhat better.

TOTALLY AGREE with your comments and the underlying sentiments in
respect to Starr.
Additional or supporting thoughts/comments:
1. Lewinsky is an American Citizen who has rights and should not be
treated as she has been treated. Who does Starr think he is! If all
this is legal then we need to take a look at our investigative
procedures.
2. A question in my mind: how can Starr give her immunity? From what?
If she made a misstatement in an affidavit then the punishment is up to
the judge in the case, not Ken Starr. If misstatements in affidavits
are going to be prosecuted (persecuted?) perjury now then I wager every
lawyer in the country is worried!!
3. What is her alleged crime? Who is trying to get perjured testimony?
Doesn't it seem that Starr is more than willing to put in perjured
testimony? I have felt for some time that he basically advertises that
if you are willing to tell a story that he wants then he is willing to
base a prosecution on your testimony. NO SEARCH FOR TRUTH IN STARR's

4. Clinton lacks a backbone and always makes me mad. The hypocrisy
seems to be mile wide, however, when the tongue clucking starts about
"lying". These same people didn't think that was such a big deal 25
years ago. And no one in this administration has spent 36-48 hours
straight (can't remember the exact number) running two shredders
non-stop like Oliver North did. Everyone seems to think he is a hero
and a man with great "character".
5. As you point out Starr has done more than I at least am comfortable
with to get testimony he wants and to find something. Every document
has been gone over in spades. There isn't anything there and that's the
bottom line. Many people seem to be so obsessed with their hatred of
Clinton (and Hilary) that its like Roswell... We don't have the
evidence and we have spent millions looking over all the places where
the evidence would be if there is any and we don't find anything BUT WE
STILL KNOW IN OUR HEARTS that something wrong was done. My question is
always: WHAT? Tell me what it is that is supposed to have been done,
not necessarily in detail, but give me an outline of the general
scheme. THERE IS NEVER AN ANSWER. My conclusion is that there is
nothing to find. Again, the hypocrisy comes to the fore!
That's enough from me.
I'm sure you don't agree with all of this; but we are fed up.
Do you agree that the quality of news coverage we have now is really
pretty pathetic?
Enough for now. Keep up the good work

To the Editor,
As the fate of a President hangs in the balance the words being used to
describe the critical moments grow weaker. A Secret Service agent saw Monica and Bill "in a
compromising position" is all we will now hear. Our frustrations can only grow
when even denials are worded to leave openings for later admissions.
The quoted words could mean naked and visible intercourse like in a
porn movie. It could
also mean clothing mussed up and the two groping around with each other in a darkened
room. We deserve straight talk from the press. It looks like diversionary language such as
"affair", "dallying", and now, "compromising position" will
rule right up to the end and many people will never really know what happened to cause a President to lose his
job.-Ken

I have two questions regarding the scandal.
1. How did the Paula Jones' Attorneys find out about the alleged affair.
It seems to me that this scandal would not have occurred had they not
subpoenaed these two woman. Who was there informant?
2. Television showed a tape yesterday of the President returning to the
White House after winning the 1996 election. Lewinsky was there and
they exchanged a hug. However, what has not been reported is that
according to her timeline, she was not working at the White House at
that time. She had been transferred to the Pentagon several months
earlier. What was she doing there?
Please respond

Oh please, Bill Clinton can't keep it in his pants so the
Republican Party is at fault again, right? For once and for all why cant the public
admit they elected a snake. He lies consistently about his personal and political
life. I'm surprised it took this long to go big. I'm not saying ms. lewinski
is an angel here either, but a 50 year old man knows the limitations and emotions of a 24
year old girl.

I am disgusted by our president's misuse of his position. Sure, his
political enemies may have dug a bit to expose this story, but you don't
create something merely by shedding light on it. Clinton has undoubtedly
been aware of them as well, and yet still chose to live in a way that
not only belittled his position as a president but his integrity as a
man as well. I hope America has learned a lesson. Integrity and
character DO matter.

I just want to say I've lost faith in all men, because if the president
of the united states is showing all that this behavior is okay then we
are in a heap of trouble! It is not a good thing for a fifth grader to
hear about this on TV and years later begin to practice this
unbelievable behavior. I do believe this is a learned behavior and a
pathetic one at that. As an American of the United States I am appalled!
With both sides of course. Her for fabricating her story and he for
denying it.

It is abundantly clear that the only agenda Clinton has is saving his own
ass!! His concern should be with his country, party and his family. If
even part of the allegations are true he should resign without delay. If
they are not true he should cooperate fully and immediately with Starr's
investigation to put an end to this NOW. Bill, you're the president not
some slick lawyer, drop the legalese and talk straight to the public.
Leave the the legal slight of hand to the likes of Johnny Cocoran. If you
have to go out leave the office with a little dignity.

Our pres. is just a man like any other man and Monica is a woman who will
go down on her knees to get ahead!! I don't care what sexual behavior he
engages in so long as it is not with a child, and Monny ain't no child.
also think we need to remember that Tripp is the woman who accused Bush of an
affair. and we also haven't heard much of the family friend who donated nearly
half-million dollars to get Monny a job as an intern--that would get her some
attention from the pres. thanks,

Seriously, the reason you elect a candidate with character is a person of
character doesn't blow up in your face, and obliterate all the gains made.
Next time, elect a candidate, not a slimeball, because a slimeball will
ultimately slime you too when the wind shifts. In the end, we all get

An Independent Counsel can only produce 3 products: Indictments, Trials,
and Convictions (including plea bargains).
In regard to Bill Clinton, Kenneth Starr has never produced any of
these. That's Starr's record. Rather than give us products, he's given
us leaks. Virtually everything we know about this so-called "scandal"
is by virtue of a leak from Starr's office, or one of his purported
witnesses.
Why doesn't it occur to anyone that Starr is simply following his long
standing modus operandi (don't give them products, give them leaks).
Why doesn't it occur to anyone that this leak is just too, too
conveniently placed right before the State of the Union Address?
Why doesn't it occur to anyone that this leak was collected from a White
House groupie who says one thing when she's bragging to her friends in
the locker room, and another thing when she testifies under oath?

Lt. Kelly Flynn resigned from the USAF rather than face a Court Martial
for disobeying a direct order to cool her affair with the husband of an
enlisted person. In my previous 20+ years in the USAF I found that
marital infidelity was not normally considered a serious enough offence
for the commanding officer to issue a direct order for the participant
to cool it.
However, the military has a very strict code of conduct when it comes
to fraternization between Officers and enlisted. I submit that in this
modern day of 'Liberalization' it would not be as acceptable to court
martial an officer for fraternizing with the Enlisted as it would be to
court martial them for disobeying a direct order, hence the direct
order.
Bill Clinton, as President of the United States, is Commander In Chief
of our military and would be regarded as Officer, this latest name he
has been linked to in matters intimate I believe would be classified as
Enlisted. Therefore Bill Clinton, as Commander In Chief, is guilty of
fraternization.
Who would give the Commander in Chief a direct order to 'Cool it with
the Enlisted'? Congress! Then when he doesn't, give him some of those
equal rights he's always spouting off about.
When a draft dodging, non card carrying Socialist becomes our Commander
In Chief we deserve him. You say you don't deserve him? Did you vote
against him in either election? Either you are against him or you
deserve him!

I am tired of hearing how great the economy
is because of Bill Clinton. . . actually, the economy is great "in spite of
" Clinton! Just listen to the "State of the Union" address and see how much
more money he wants to take from us an give to others. Congress controls the money, not the
president -- Government 101. It's been a real fight to keep this do-gooder,
womanizing and coward from doing more harm than he has.

I usually wouldn't respond to articles such as yours, but I can't
believe what I just read. In your opinion, "its the Republicans fault
for this mess that Clinton has caused" ? Clinton on his own free will,
has sex with an employee during the time that all the other sex scandals
are closing in around him, and its the Republicans fault for saying so?
You are just as sick as he is. My God, this is the man that is in
"charge" of our country! In my opinion, if this is an example of the
type of leadership and wise thinking he is capable of, what the hell is
he doing trying to run our country! I think he is screwing the whole
country, not just a few secretaries.

Lets see, the American economy is the strongest in the world. We
have full employment and low inflation. The stock markets are at near
historical highs. In 1998 we are expecting to have a balanced Federal
budget. These are facts which have had a positive impact on the lives of
millions of people.
Anyone who thinks the economy hasn't benefited
from the economic
policies of the Clinton administration is out of touch with reality. Yet
many would gladly bring the administration down and put the economy and the
country at risk. Why? Unfortunately, the answer is obvious. Many
self-styled loyal Americans put their own personal or political agendas
ahead of the good of the country.

In Rebuttal:
>Lets see, the American economy is the strongest in the world.
Yes, and it has been since World War II (or even before) Bill was
not around then, or he might have tried to take credit for it.
>We have full employment and low inflation.
Yes, thanks to the Republican Congress who prevented Bill from doing
all that stuff he wanted to.
>The stock markets are at near historical highs.
Especially Hillary's? Bill had nothing to do with the stock market.
>In 1998 we are expecting to have a balanced Federal budget.
If you remember, or maybe you don't want to, that was the goal of
the Republicans which eventually Bill picked up on.
>These are facts which have had a positive impact on the lives of
>millions of people.
Anyone who thinks the economy hasn't benefited
>from the economic policies of the Clinton administration is out of
>touch with reality.
It's obvious you don't realize there has been a Republican Congress
and a Democratic President. That equals to "not much being done".
Which is probably the main reason for a "good" economy - government
has stayed out of the way of the American people and businesses.
>Yet many would gladly bring the administration down and put the economy and the
country at risk. Why? Unfortunately, the answer is obvious. Many self-styled
loyal Americans put their own personal or political agendas ahead of the good of the
country.
Hey, Bill is a President - NOT A KING... The only one putting down Bill
is Bill. If he breaks the law, he suffers like any other crook. He has
PROVEN to be a guy that needs to be watched - 24 hours a day! That's
his own doing, not somebody else's political agenda.
>As a nonpolitical pragmatist, I find this disgusting.
What do you find disgusting? That Americans choose to keep their
leaders in line? We decided long ago that nobody is above the law, not even
your friend "Bill". I personally find "Bill the-great-liar
Clinton"
disgusting.
President Bill Clinton needs to RESIGN, before he gets RESIGNED.

As The Commander in Chief, President Bill Clinton should be held
accountable for the misconduct which is so apparent to the American public.
As a member of the United States military I find it disgraceful that our
leader cannot follow the same Standards of Conduct we abide by. Running
the country is not all about a good economy, as most self-serving Americans
feel. It's about Integrity, Loyalty, Obedience, and Defense of the
Greatest Nation in the World. Members of the military look to our
superiors for example, but this is what we get--Adultery, and worst of all
Lying. If young men and women right out of high school can live by a Code,
why not the President.
What is a Professional?
-- One who is dedicated to vocation.
-- One who is identified with a calling requiring ethical behavior,

-- One who maintains a high standard of achievement and conduct.
-- One who is devoted to the concept of service, rather than personal gain.

Dear Mr. President/ Assuming the smoke accurately suggests that there
is or was some sort of fire, here's what you must say from the fireside
to your fellow Americans: "You elected me twice with clear indications
that I am a flesh-and blood flawed human being. I have acknowledged
these flaws and do so now, and apologize for them; first to my beloved
family, and then to the Vice President, my colleagues in the Executive
Branch, to the Congress, and to every American. It is true that I had a
friendly, and perhaps overly affectionate relationship with Monica
Lewinsky. I hold myself fully accountable for that; she is a very young
person and is blameless. The specific details of our contacts, which
are terminated, shall remain private--the only person to whom I must
account for those are my wonderful wife, who has courageously stood by
me despite my weaknesses and errors. The American people are entitled
to know this: I have carefully sought to be accurate in my public
statements, while at the same time sparing those closest to me
unnecessary embarrassment and pain; I have never, either directly or
through any other person, encouraged any person to commit perjury; I am
the same man you elected your President, and will fill out my term of
office; however, I have learned a painful lesson of responsibility from
this episode, and will exercise better personal judgment in the future.
You might be confused by my sworn enemies to confuse my measured and
perhaps vague public statements with the types of "cover-up" allegations
that caused President Nixon to resign the Presidency in the face of
almost certain impeachment. Don't be confused: The former President
had personally engineered a broad-ranging conspiracy to obstruct the
wheels of justice as they came to terms with public crimes affecting the
conduct of the Government. By contrast, my public and private conduct
and statements regarding Ms. Lewinsky have not involved the public
trust. This is a fearsome and lonely job, and the personal solace one
takes in the interactions with the exceptional people who work here are
matters of the private trust. I have sometimes failed the test not only
of your private standards, but of my own as well. But let's be
serious: The Constitution, about which I know a great deal, speaks of
"high crimes and misdemeanors." The history of that phrase makes clear
that it refers to the conduct of this Nation's business, not the
personal indiscretions of the occupant of this Office. In the context of
that history and of the personal peccadilloes of former Presidents, no
objective person of goodwill and love of this country should wish to see
the stewardship of the Nation founder over my effort to protect my
family and a fine young White House aide from the hellish scandal that
comes with public humiliation. I will continue my service to the
American people, and will fully cooperate with the Independent
Prosecutor's and Justice Departments investigative processes. To those
who have expressed their support for me in these trying days, thank you,
and to all the Nation, I pledge to serve you in the future in a manner
that not only fulfills the public trust, but as well in a manner
befitting the once and former dignity of this great Office, which I
pledge to you from the bottom of my heart I will seek to restore. Good
night and God bless you."
Fred Stone
* * * * * *
Mr.Stone, I believe you have a wise, accurate insight into the psyche of
the American
people, implicitly contained within the suggested speech President Clinton could give
to the nation. You have chosen not only the best approach he should take to this
messy business, but also the correct posture and phrases to be used, all of which
would, I believe, resonate positively with the majority of the people. There is real
risk, of course, that the speech would resonate negatively, but the President is used
to taking chances with his private life and so I do not think that this possibility
would, by itself, deter him. Rather, it is a basic lack of imagination and trust
which will be seen, inevitably, in the advice such well-meaning advisors as Mickey
Kanter (sp?), Harold Ickes, etc. will give him, I wager, that will derail any tendency
to act in this vein.
That will be a shame. Obviously you believe, as I do, that the President did
satisfy his libido, at least in the case of Wilinsky, but that at the same time, he
did not - a la Nixon - attempt to obstruct justice. This last point is very tricky,
and because it is so tricky, I think Clinton can free himself of the "obstruction of
justice" threat. To conclude, I have had my own thoughts on what strategy
Clinton
should take - really designed with the objective of letting Kenneth Starr go so far
with Wilinsky (perjury and punishment) as to cause a national backlash against him and
a consequent realization by the public that this president should NOT resign over such
a matter - but I believe your more simple approach is superior. I wish many, many
people could read the speech you have written.
Frank Musinsky

It always seemed to me that the one talks about morality the most is
the one who is himself immoral and is doing something he is accusing
others of doing. So put down all the morals. Everybody has his or her own
skeletons to hide. Unless you are a president, nobody cares about that.
About instructing others to lie, is there anybody in the world who never
lies?
A lie about a sexual relationship is perfectly fine for anybody. A human being
is a human being not a saint. If anybody acts like a saint, it's a lie
itself. There is no saint on earth. So some bad character in a
President is not alarmingly bad. We are looking for a capable man to
lead this country, not a Moral Saint to save the country. Otherwise,
we don't need any God to save us.
Jiang Tang

Once again, the left is attempting to justify clearly inappropriate
conduct by blaming the Republicans. If the allegations are true, then
this man has lied to the American people once again and this is
inexcusable conduct under the standards imposed by the very same
people that created this standard with Mr. Nixon. One thing is for sure,
Mr. Starr did not make Mr. Clinton sleep with anyone... except perhaps
you know who!
Edward B. Gentilcore
Yes, we do know who, Edward, but we're too polite to say the name. It's interesting
that all the bad publicity has hounded Mr. Clinton right back into his marriage. My
bet is that the first couple have rediscovered each other, at least until the end of
Clinton's term. After that, it could be party time. KS

Hello,
I enjoyed your opinion piece. It mirrors my thoughts exactly. I am more
concerned about the impact of all this on your country and the world --
we do not need another scandal over what is a minor matter -- than I am
about whether the President lied. This is not a lie about having
misappropriated $1 billion. It's only sex for heaven's sake.
Incidentally, the President should be able to date whomever he likes,
not "whoever."

Thanks J.

would be calling for a special prosecutor. KS

Hello Ken:
You decry Ginsburg's "choose one from column A, choose one from
column B" false dichotomy, then in your closing paragraphs - do
exactly the same thing by declaring "no one but Republican activists
and the TV media wants to go through this public degradation
ceremony". This is a mighty convenient way to later claim that
anyone who disagrees with your position is a politically motivated
person making a partisan attack, instead of the carefully reasoned
bipartisan Clinton flack that you appear to be.
The country weathered Watergate just fine, it can withstand the
disgrace of another fallen leader as well. I for one am glad to see
that this creep is finally getting the press coverage that he
deserves. I hope you don't feel that this is an "improper" response
to your editorial.

Jesus Christ!!! The "wannabe" Gestapo will stop at nothing
to get a
payback for the near expulsion of Nixon. Probably only two people know
whether Clinton did what Starr appears anxious to allege. And, if there
is a pattern in anything it seems to be that as Starr nears one dead end
after another he compensates by creating or opportunistically latching
on to yet another set of allegations. Even if Clinton did what is
alleged, it sure as hell doesn't rise to the level of subversion of the
Constitution attempted by Nixon. I'm so godd--d sick of all this
garbage that I called a local TV station which, in its early half-hour
news program spent many minutes, only to have it repeated in the
national news segment immediately following, and read the riot act about
cluttering up real news with wild speculation and would-be experts. It
rather reminds me of the O.J. case, public flailings of the unknowing by
the uncaring wielding the unknown!!! Cut it out!!!

It is amazing how easily you dismiss both the deceit and amoral behavior
of the President. I also am amazed that Republicans are blamed for this
latest arrogant gaffe by Mr. Clinton. He is a knowing participant in
this nonsense and because people like yourself who have made excuses for
him the past five years, he again is the "victim" of his own
indulgences. I further submit sir that in your zeal to protect this man,
you further denigrate the office of the Presidency with your pathetic
rationalizations.
Even the Republicans had the class to remove Mr. Nixon after his debacle.
Where are the Democrats who proclaiming what is best for the country. Oh
yes I believe it "takes a village to raise a child.". I am sure glad
this is the best the village of Washington has to offer our youth.
Sexual indiscretion is hardly the smoking gun in this case! It is the
ease of which Mr. Clinton lies and the blind acceptance of the press and
in particular people like yourself who condone dishonesty and lying under
oath.
I hope all you senior citizens are listening out there. This is the man
who told you that he was saving you from financial ruination and how the
Republicans were doing away with Social Security. Stay tuned as I am sure
that story will be retold in a different light in the not so distant
future.Sa he has said may times. Nothing inappropriate has take place. I
would imagine that the interpretation of that word is open for a very
LIBERAL translation. Remember Mr. Clintons Motto: "Its not illegal or

Come on people!! You still don't get it do you! I see
one man here refer to Jesus Christ, so I assume he believes, but his reference is
derogatory. We don't define morals, they were already defined for us. I want God back in
America, but He won't come unless we invite Him! Our government leaders should be the
first to set the example. Another person here said " it's only sex"; look how
sex has caused hurt, disease and downfalls of leaders, families and civilizations! Sodom
and Gomorrah is where we're headed here. I know, no leader is perfect, everyone has sin,
but let's admit it, repent from it, and try to do better. You people who voted for this
man knew his reputation then, so I don't expect you to be surprised, but on after another
after another....come on!!! WAKE UP!!!! Let's get to the bottom of this and get the trash
reporting off TV so our children don't have to hear about sex in the White House every
night. All praise and Glory to God who strengthens me through Christ Jesus!!!!
