The 2nd Triangle Resolved______________________

In any case, the second love triangle,
works itself out in ways that advance
the theme of the movie.

It is resolved with deceptions of a kind
that are common to romantic comedies,
which revolve around the fact that
Will and Annie are kept apart
by her father's demand that Will come up with that $50
to win her hand, or else she goes to the Peddler.

As we saw, Will's foolishness works against him.
First, he squanders the money on presents for Annie.
In an effort to escape marriage to Annie,
the Peddler then buys the presents from Will.
Along with the payment Will gets from Jud for the Little Wonder,
he again has the $50.

Working with only two thirds of a light bulb upstairs
Will is convinced he tricked the Peddler
into giving him the money that will let him steal back Annie.

When Will almost squanders the money again,
bidding $50 for Annie's company at the auction
the Peddler outbids him
so Will can keep the money and finally win her hand in marriage.

But the coming together of Will and Annie is also obstructed
by the fact that each is beset by temptation --
he in Kansas City (and at home)
and she with the Peddler.

Here's Will being tempted by young girls
who sing and dance into a scene,
to illustrate his difficulty resisting temptation.

Fortunately, Will and Annie overcome the danger of temptation.
He makes clear that, having given up his free-wheeling ways,
he expects her to do the same. And she makes clear that
if he has the right to cheat, so does she.

In the end, they guard their newfound monogamy
with some good old-fashioned manhandling and walloping
directed at challengers.

Here's Will dispatching the Peddler, who,
having escaped the danger of marriage to Annie,
still can't resist acting seductively toward her.

And here's Annie pounding another woman
after Will gets a little too intimate with her.
She is Gertie, the vain and frivolous woman
who earlier latched on to Curly
at the gathering before the social.
Her role in the movie is to temporarily disrupt
both love triangles, adding a second female to each.

At the end, having committed themselves to each other,
the movie implies that Will and Annie have sex
and make no effort to conceal the fact that
they are flushed with delight,
which again suggests that this is a place
with a relaxed, if somewhat traditional, attitude toward sex.

Will, who isn't all that bright, and who returned from Kansas City is in love with  Annie, the girl who can't say "No".  He wins her heart, although she believed she was in love with the conniving Peddler, Ali Hakim, who was trying to seduce her. Annie's father, Mr. Carnes, (who is first shown, here) wanted to stop Will from marrying his daughter and favored the Peddler, but accepts Will in the end
