Campaign Gothic:
As you can see in the image above, ABCNEWS.com has turned presidential candidates George W. Bush and Al Gore into eerie-looking characters with some simple color changes. Gore's open mouth and Bush's down-turned mouth and intense look complement the sickly blue and green color scheme to give the two a disturbing, angry, appearance.

But the image of ABC News anchor Peter Jennings, on another part of the same ABC homepage, gets very different treatment. Where Gore and Bush look creepy, Jennings has an idealized photograph in which his head tilts to one side while he smiles benevolently, as if he is listening empathetically to us.

Its true that a very small photograph of ABC newsman Sam Donaldson on the same page looks a little odd, as well. But that doesn't seem to be intended.

So Gore and Bush are turned into something gothic (Frankenstein and Dracula, perhaps) while Jennings looks like he is halfway to sainthood. But nobody can say the web site, which displayed the images March 12, was politically unfair -- it treated the image of Gore and Bush in an equally offensive way.
