Somewhere in the desert of New Mexico,
a girl is found wandering alone and in shock.

When Sgt. Ben Peterson and his partner
find the trailer where her family has been vacationing,
it turns out the side has been torn open.
Everything is in disarray and her family is missing.

A strange print is found near the trailer
and sugar cubes -- of all things -- are in evidence.

Soon a high-pitched sound is heard in the distance.
An ambulance attendant tells Sgt. Peterson
it must be the the wind,
which behaves strangely in the desert.

The little girl reacts to the sound
with a kind of numbed horror.
She knows what it is, but is unable to speak
because of her state of shock.

When the cops go to a local store
to see if the owner has any information
that might help them figure out what is going on,
they discover the side of the store
has been torn off, as well.
Once again, they find widespread destruction,
as the sand storm now howls in the background.
A rifle has been bent into a v-shape;
the store owner is dead, and sugar is again exposed.
Sgt. Peterson's partner, who stays on the scene, alone,
goes out to investigate when he hears the same
high-pitched sound that was heard at the trailer.
Then he fires his gun and screams off screen.
That's the last time he is seen in the movie,
at least whole.
Later, lab tests reveal the dead store owner
is full of formic acid.
A dead store owner, a missing cop and a missing family.
What could it be?
